Cheng Man Ching’s Taiji Quan is yang style taiji quan, as he learned taiji quan from Yang Cheng Fu. A brilliant Taiji Quan master in his own right, he refined Yang Cheng Fu long form into a shorter version with fewer repetitions. This is something that is widely known, but what is not said is that the short form is short so you can repeat it.

Single Whip About Cheng Man Ching Professor Cheng Man Ching Of all the modern Tai Chi masters, none have had the impact of the late Cheng Man Ching (also written Cheng Man-ch'ing or Zheng Manqing). As a child growing up in China, Cheng suffered from a chronic lung condition and a local doctor suggested that he take up Tai Chi to remediate his condition. The full form is known as the Cheng Man Ching (CMC) 37—you may also see it referred to as the Yang Short Form. There are 37 unique movements in the full form.

Cheng Man-ch’ing (1902–1975) was an inner student of Yang Cheng-fu. After Yang Cheng-fu’s death and before coming to the United States, Cheng Man-ch’ing created a shortened version of the traditional form taught him by Yang Cheng-fu. That shortened version is now widely taught in the United States and other countries.

The first is to follow the teacher, using small stances, just Tan Shifu at Chen Man Ching’s tomb trying to copy the teacher’s movements. The next is to pay attention to getting all the arm movements correct. Cheng Man Ching, a famous Teacher of Tai Chi Chuan, developed this form as an alternative to the Yang Long form, which can take 20 minutes to perform.
